BG Be Active will coordinate European Mile in Bulgaria, as the activities will continue between April and September. Many partners of BG Be Active expressed a desire to join the initiative by organizing events in their locations. The various cities will host runs, alternative walks, sports holidays, and even environmental events - all with a distance of at least 1 mile dedicated to the initiative. The campaign is planned to unfold in the following locations of Bulgaria: Plovdiv, Sofia, Smolyan, Troyan, Ruse, Varna, Silistra, Rakovski, Pleven, Asenovgrad, Shumen etc.

Events in Plovdiv:

The first city to cover the mile is Plovdiv, the European Capital of Culture 2019. Numerous "warm-up events" are planned in the city, followed by a major flagship event carried out by the coordinating organization and its partners. The events start on April 28, as part of the NoElevatorsDay. The participants will not only climb the stairs to the second highest hill in Plovdiv, but will also reach the mile. In May, as part of the program of the After Covid City festival, the weekends of the European Mile are going to be dedicated to mini cross events, accompanied by functional trainings of our partners from WOW Gym. In May, European Mile will be in the focus of traditional Plovdiv festivals, such as "Hello, Health", "Plovdiv Vibes" and the "Nameless Festival". After the flagship event, the European Mile concept will be communicated to our network of more than 400 schools so they can include it as an element in the European School Sport Day which we also coordinate in Bulgaria in September.

WHAT IS THE IDEA BEHIND EUROPEAN MILE?

The EUROPEAN MILE is one of our brand new events, that we are organising, as an official European Week of Sport event. The concept of the EUROPEAN MILE is designed to build a bridge between ISCA and European Week of Sport. It will focus on using public streets for citizens’ activities and mobility, and thus celebrate both the heathy and environmentally friendly modes of transport, and the broader benefits of physical activity. In addition, EUROPEAN MILE is part of the year-round ISCA campaign NowWeMOVE, which has the vision of getting 100 million more Europeans active in sport or physical activity by 2020.
