Over 100,000 people have taken part in 50 European Mile celebration events so far in Spain, which has focused on engaging public administrations, schools and popular events in different locations in the initiative.

Spanish National Coordinator Deporte para la Educación y la Salud (DES) also designed their very own App so that anyone who wants to participate in the European Mile can do so without having to go to a specific event at a particular time. The App will continue to promote the European Mile and accumulate miles until the end of June.

The most prominent places where the European Mile has been celebrated so far are:

  • Burriana, a place where the European Mile has been celebrated by the entire town hall and a great display was made throughout the municipality throughout MOVE Week, with relays, posters in streets and fixed signs that will remain as a legacy of the Mile for the population.
  • Colegio Liceo Molière, where there has been a great display of activities in the nature in the collaboration with the City Council (Villanueva de la Cañada). Participation in the event was opened to the whole community.
  • Club Bera Bera in San Sebastián, where the La Concha promenade was filled with runners and walkers celebrating the European Mile with their event t-shirts.
  • Madrid Casa de Campo, where all the trails were covered by 50 running MOVE Agents to promote the European Mile and encourage all passers-by to join the celebration (cycling, walking, running...)
  • Canary Islands, where the population has been encouraged to visit Playa de las Canteras in celebration of the European Mile and raffles have been held for gifts and merchandising for the Mile in the collaboration with a local Driving School.
  • Presentación de María School (Vitoria), which combined the celebration of World Environment Day and the European Mile, inviting the community to a new challenge in the nature by offering four different parks where participants had to find hidden stones and answer some questions related to the Mile and the environment.

The European Mile in Spain will continue to be held until the end of June through the App for adults and in different schools, as it is the final event of the 2020-21 active school activities program. It is expected that some 100,000 miles will be travelled until the end of the month, at which time the kilometres / miles will be delivered to the Spanish Olympic Committee to support the team that will represent the country at the Tokyo Olympics.
